An exemplary commitment to sustainable development May 2015

Mustela is part of Expanscience, a pharmaceuticals and dermo-cosmetics laboratory that has been strongly committed to sustainable development for over 10 years. For the last two years, this approach has been recognised by AFNOR, France’s official, independent assessment organization and the leader in its field. Expanscience was the first pharmaceuticals and dermo-cosmetics laboratory to achieve “Exemplary” status in an AFAQ 26000 assessment.

Protecting skin, protecting nature

All Mustela Bébé care products are designed to minimize their impact on the planet. All of our foaming cleansing formulae are now biodegradable, all bottles are recyclable (based on French market criteria), boxes used for cosmetic packs are made from paper sourced from sustainably-managed forests, superfluous cardboard has been eliminated and some bottles are lighter. At Mustela, sustainable development is one of our top priorities.

Environmental action officially recognised

More generally, this approach reflects the one taken by Laboratoires Expanscience, of which Mustela forms part. Deeply committed to sustainable development over the last ten years, Expanscience was the first laboratory recognised as “exemplary” by the French standardization association, AFNOR, in 2013, following an AFAQ 26000 assessment, which measures a company’s contribution to sustainable development.

At the end of 2014, the company’s “exemplary” status was renewed subsequent to a follow-up assessment. The assessment body highlighted the following points:

  • Sustainable development is part of the company’s culture and supported at the highest level by the chairman of Expanscience Jean Paul Berthomé.
  • Sustainable development principles are applied from the outset - from the sourcing of raw materials to product design and manufacturing.

Expanscience’s environmentally-friendly policies have already delivered tangible results, saving more than 100 tonnes of plastic, and 120 tonnes of cardboard since 2006. At its R&D and production site in Epernon, water consumption dropped by almost 26% between 2010 and 2014, electricity by 13.7% and gas by 27.5%*.

Moving forward into the future

Building on this recognition, the company now plans to continue its efforts. For example, from this year onwards, all new Mustela products will be eco-designed to further reduce their impact on the environment. By reducing packaging or increasing recyclability, and developing increasingly natural formulae, more than ever before Mustela products care for your baby’s skin while protecting both people and the environment.
